Natural Dyeing Course

Colour, Dyes, Learning, Natural dyeing, pattern, Travel, Tutorials

As part of the process of using recycled materials in my work, I also use dyeing, batik and fabric printing processes to change the nature of many of my recycled fabrics before using them in quilting projects. This then moves naturally onto developing layers of stitching, quilting and embroidery to make marks and patterns on surfaces. This is part of the work that i really enjoy, and I often work on developing large pieces of coloured and printed fabrics without an end product in mind – its a form of doodling with colour and pattern in layers, rather like working in a sketchbook.

Earlier this year I attended a WEA course in Preston, Lancashire run by artist Rachel Dawson on using natural dyes which was full of very interesting ideas. It was great to have a whole weekend to work alongside other textile artists and play with new ideas. and lots of mixtures in bowls and pans!

I’m still experimenting with these ideas alongside my use of other dyes……

About the Artist

Rosi Thornton is a visual artist based in Darlington, in the north east of England. Her interests combine pattern, print, colour, and cloth, which she uses creatively in textiles, quilts, printmaking, and handmade books.

She believes passionately in recycling, skill-sharing, and art within communities, and started REJIG as a way of drawing these related interests together into a creative whole.
