Strip blocks made from shirts

Rejig has been established as a community sewing network for a few years now and during that time, we have seen lots of people join our weekly recycling and sewing sessions and go on to make some fabulous things. Many people also come along with their children and grandchildren to our free workshops at community events including our monthly ‘Sew Saturdays’ in the South Park, the annual Festival of Thrift, Darlington Carnival and the recent ‘Love Darlo’ event held on a sunny Sunday afternoon in July.

For us, it’s all about building community, making new friends and learning to sew and recycle at the same time – our favourite slogan is ‘Turn that Gown Upside Down’ because in our friendly drop-in sessions, we aim to encourage everyone we meet to Reuse, Recycle and Rejig all manner of things. We also get offered many donations of fabric, haberdashery and sewing machines, such as this beautiful Singer hand sewing machine, to use in the weekly sessions and wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has shared and recycled things with us – why not come and see what we do with your gifts?

Come and visit us at a ‘Sew Saturday’ event in the South Park and join in the fun!

About the Artist

Rosi Thornton is a visual artist based in Tyne and Wear. Her interests combine pattern, print, colour, and cloth, which she uses creatively in textiles, quilts, printmaking, and handmade books.

She believes passionately in recycling, skill-sharing, and art within communities, and started the REJIG project as a way of drawing these related interests together into a creative whole.
