BLOCK OF THE MONTH

OCTOBER: THE BASIC 9 PATCH BLOCK

The 9 Patch is simple to sew, using squares of varied colours or 2 contrasting colours. It is a useful starting point to create new designs as the squares can be subdivided into smaller shapes using triangles or rectangles.

Note: When your pieces are ready to be sewn together, make sure to trim them all to the same size to ensure they fit together correctly.

METHOD 1: USING MIXED COLOURS

1. Cut nine 3½” x 3½” squares of varied colours, and arrange into a 3×3 layout.

2. Sew the squares in the top row together, pressing the seams in one direction.

Next sew the middle row, pressing in the opposite direction.

Join the last row, and press in the original direction.

3. Sew the 3 rows together, and press well.

METHOD 2: USING TWO COLOURS

1. Cut 3 long strips of each of your 2 chosen colours, measuring 3½” high.

2. Sew 2 sets of strips together in the following sequence to make 2 long blocks.

3. Cut the blocks (across the sewn lines) into new strips, each measuring 3½” wide.

4. Sew 3 strips together, pressing the seams, to create a checkerboard design.
